About the work

A sculptural portrait of Volodymyr Zelensky, executed in an expressive contemporary manner with a noticeable inclination toward realistic modeling. This is not a formal image of a political figure adorned with attributes of power, but an attempt to convey a person's character through his face. The dark bronze-green patina gives the bust a special depth. Golden highlights on the protruding parts of the form create the effect of aged metal, as if the sculpture has already passed through time and acquired a history of its own. The expressively rendered facial features, the tension around the eyes, the furrows of the forehead and the restrainedly pressed lips form the image of a man with a difficult inner experience. The gaze is directed to the side and slightly forward, as if beyond the space in which the sculpture stands. One can read in it concentration, weariness, determination and a certain wariness. This face does not triumph — it thinks, assesses and, it seems, bears the burden of responsibility. The texture of the surface draws particular attention. It is uneven, alive, almost rough, thanks to which the metal does not seem cold and soulless. Instead of idealized smoothness, we see a human presence preserved in the material. The neck collar with vertical relief adds character to the composition, while the massive geometric pedestal emphasizes its monumentality. In this work, two elements are interestingly combined: the ancient tradition of the portrait bust and a contemporary vision of a historical figure. The bronze tone seems to transfer the image from the present into the realm of historical memory. This is a portrait not so much of an office as of a human character in times of great trials. The sculpture leaves room for one's own interpretation: how this man will appear in the memory of future generations — as a politician, a symbol of an era, or simply a person who happened to find himself at the center of history.
