The Architecture of Ceramics

Yurii Oliinyk and Givi Miminoshvili on the essence of ceramics and its life in the interior.

The Architecture of Ceramics

It has been about two years since the "coke-anthracite" tableware project was launched. Only enthusiasm, huuuge enthusiasm could produce a result, in the absence of funding and elementary conditions ... And yet we set ourselves the task of creating a universal Tableware-Object-Construction Set, for mastering not only the dining plane, but also the walls, the whole interior, minds and hearts ...

We decided to compose the plate — a curved plane with a base and a wall mount — in three consecutive sizes. The set includes a tea-and-coffee Bowl of a strict, cylindrical shape with a longitudinal handle and a bottom shifted inwards. Besides its direct purpose, it can be used as a candle holder and is an element for constructing various objects in the form of fruit vases and all sorts of pyramids ... And the thickness of the walls allows the drink's contents to keep warmth or coolness longer.

The set is designed for table setting as well as for a buffet, and gives ample opportunity for the extravagant presentation of various dry dishes, appetisers, desserts ...

When the tableware is not in use, it is built up into whimsical sets, pagoda-like towers, futuristic constructions, minimalist panels ...

"Coke — the energy of the depths" is conceived in an achromatic tonality; black, grey and rusty red colours, ideally suited to be an impeccable background for culinary diversity.

The deliberately rough texture covered with a thick and opaque composite glaze creates a tactilely attractive surface. Cutting the clay slabs with a metal wire to make the tableware brings out the structure of the material to the maximum, thanks to the minimal touching of the surface by hands at the early stage of creating the object. On each plane a special longitudinal grooving is applied, resembling the "soundtrack" on a film reel. It is a sign of the presence of the object's making process, it recalls the pre-sound rustle of vinyl or the special anticipation before watching a film.

Yes! These lyrical chords are embedded in the design of the tableware, alongside the tangible mass of the large plate-trays, in contrast with the sensual subtlety of the images the object carries within itself. Depending on the angle at which light falls on the surface, the deep colour changes with a reflected heavenly glint, creating a special and inimitable atmosphere in the interior ...

"Coke" tableware is not intended for storage in kitchen cabinets, it is created for use, for collecting, for creating an installation in an interior ... The display possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Give it a try!
