Yuliia Kovaleva: There is no art-market in Ukraine. What is the problem?

It seems that Ukraine is integrated into the world art market at first glance. But it is not like that.

Our artists are in demand all over the world, their works are in collections of foreign museums, they regularly receive reputable art awards, their works are sold at prestigious auctions, and they do participate in international fairs. We have someone and something to be proud of, there is much to strive for. However, this happens more likely not because of, but despite.

The realitity is next: there is no art market in Ukraine. This process is not regulated at the legislative level, there are no clear rules of the game and no registry of works. There is no systemic support either from the state or from philanthropists. Thanks to the fragmented efforts of those who care, there are several systematic programs for supporting young talents, the rest are more of an episodic nature. Unfortunately, in our country few people are interested in investing in the development of young artists.

At the same time, Ukrainian galleries do not perform their tasks in full. The artist’s support is a worldwide practice for any gallery in Western Europe or the USA, because artist is its main value.

It's not just about sales. Often galleries solve a lot of issues: represent the artist on the market, broadcast his/her ideas and philosophy, store works, finance projects. In Ukraine, galleries often simply exhibit works, and it is only about eminent artists. Young, unknown or beginners are left overboard. And how many talented young people choose a more “stable” professional path, realizing that in the existing conditions artist cannot survive.

That is why our galleries fall out of the communication "artist - collector", here art dealers rule. This is a very non-public market where transactions are concluded. In fact, it harms primarily the artists themselves. In the global art market, the artist’s value is determined not by one sale, but by the total number of works sold is documented. The price, which is not stated anywhere and is not confirmed by any documents does not exist.

That is not all. There is a common belief that art is only painting. But what about sculpture, design, photography? In addition, thanks to the rapid growth of technology, a new visual art is developing: 3D installations, digital art.

In Ukraine, the number of good artists significantly exceeds the number of those who are interested in art and can support it. Someone must break this vicious circle, and not only at the state level.

Of course, Ukraine really needs the Center for Contemporary Art and the Museum of Modern Art, which must initially be positioned as part of the international scene. But we also need to create conditions in which artists would develop their principles, establish institutions of criticism, curatorship, we need funding on an ongoing basis - both from the state and from philanthropists. This should be a single strategy that is understandable to all participants. Yes, the art market cannot exist without artists. But its equally valuable participants are curators, gallery owners, auction house owners, online marketplaces, art dealers, collectors and patrons. They are influencers of the development of contemporary art.

Over the past 5 years, businessmens have noted an unprecedented outflow of professional personnel from the country. This issue is on the agenda of both the president and each business owner. But no one talks about the outflow of cultural potential, because if business is the engine of the economy, then culture is the soul of the nation. The cultural code that forms the mental culture of our society - both for contemporaries and for future generations, as well as for the whole world. If we do not deal with this now, then after 5 years it will be too late.

Destined for Happiness

The purpose of the socio-artistic action is to promote the original theatrical art of people with disabilities, as well as the inclusion of inclusive theaters in the modern cultural context without losing authenticity in the means of expression of "special" performers.
