Kovaleva Yuliya about PR service for artists on the Internet.

The main purpose of our project is to popularize contemporary art on the Internet and integrate Ukrainian contemporary culture into European cultures online. The article was published in the print edition of OVAL Deti.


- Yulia, you are the author of the online project Codeky.art of the International Platform for Contemporary Art, tell us what kind of project it is and what are its goals in Ukraine?


- Good afternoon.  I have been working in the field of culture since 2000.  I started with architecture and design - I had my own workshop.  The Codeky.art project was created back in 2016.  At first it was a platform only for Ukrainian artists.  We worked actively until 2019 on the territory of Ukraine, developed online sales in art, and in January 2020 our activity was transformed into the sphere of cultural diplomacy, since our goals were to integrate our artists into the art market of the EU and England, and their artists to our Ukrainian art  -market.

European integration in the field of art and culture is our direct action today, creating an online art market on the territory of Ukraine.  Today, users of our platform, in addition to Ukrainian, are English-speaking European consumers of cultural products and users of the UK.


- You were one of the first to start your online activities in Ukraine, what prompted you to do this?


- Yes, when we started working on the project, I heard a lot of reviews of the kind of Ukrainian artists, online will not work in art, the necessary personal meetings, exhibitions and biennials.  But the art markets all over the world have already switched to online presentations and commerce for about three years, we were the first online platform in Ukraine.  Now there are many platforms - art marketplace, but only we work in the field of cultural diplomacy and represent our authors online in European art markets online.

Ukrainian galleries actively use American and Asian marketplaces to present "their" authors on another continent, but there are such grandiose markets, unfortunately our galleries and their artists are simply lost. So, therefore, we have chosen so far narrow European markets and a wider and more prestigious English, although we also cooperate with the American online marketplace artsy.net, where we represent the authors of our PR section of the platform.


- What does a PR section mean?  Does your platform advertise authors on the internet? 

- The main goal of our project is to popularize contemporary art and integrate Ukrainian contemporary culture into European cultures online.  Ukrainian authors are very talented, but becoming popular, or at least presenting their works to young masters to the general public is almost impossible for them (and for well-known ones as well) - this is a very expensive pleasure, huge funds are needed.

Our project invests very large funds in the development of the platform and we have broad international connections and opportunities.  In the project, besides me, there is another partner and investor of the project, Yana Dubinina, an artist, a talented artist, a gallery owner, who has been working on the European market for a long time, has her own art gallery in Slovakia, and has close ties with European partners in the art market.

Online allows artists to present their works very cheaply and sometimes free of charge to at least 10,000 users a month - today they are stable users on our platform!  Therefore, we invite everyone to cooperate with us!  We are unique, and in Ukraine no one except us works in this segment of culture online and in such a wide expanse of the art buyer market!


- How do you promote artists online, what marketing tools do you use?


- Firstly, artists can maintain their own personal Blog, namely, write full-fledged articles in our online news section about their impressions, about themselves personally, what inspires them.  Self-presentation is of great importance in terms of quality online sales of your work.  We place such materials in online advertising - we represent artists.  At the same time, there is no exclusive for the sale of works.  Artists can collaborate with other galleries, art dealers - no boundaries at all.  We provide another service for artists on the way to their recognition and development.  In addition, biographies of artists and catalogs of works from the PR section are advertised. If Artists are not ready for PR and need time to adapt to the platform, they can start the stench from the “Art Market” section where works and art goods are only sold.  Anyone can try to cooperate with us.  The chance to present your work to Western users is extremely important.  If you are underestimated in one state, you may be interested in another.


- That is, the opportunity is provided to people who want art development, and not only to professionals?


- Anyone can try to present their creative and Himself personally, as the author of works, concepts.  But of course thehighest chances are with the professionals!  The world has changed a lot, people are interested in the concepts and worldview of artists, and not only in a masterfully written work, created sculpture, and what is the message, the idea carried by the author and his works.  Collectors and buyers today are interested in those who see the world not in two dimensions, but understand the essence of the world, the interaction of the world with humanity, the voice of the planet, modern vibrations of the world.  Acceptance of the modern world (and online virtual communication, labor) underlies the self-presentation of artists in the world art market, of which Ukraine is a full-fledged participant!
