Anfissa Kass: "The picture is deeper than just painted figures or plot"

Anfisa Kass is a Ukrainian talented artist who works in the style of impressionism. Today our conversation took place in Codeky Art-location, it was about the thirst for creativity and what it leads to; about new works, about society and the woman’s role in it.

 - Anfisa, when did you feel the need to paint pictures?

I started painting in my childhood. In the kindergarten, I copied pictures from the illustrations of the fairy tales book then there was an art school. I have been professionally engaged in painting since I was 5 years old. I studied at the Art School in Kiev. I got my first high education in economics. Mom dreamed of seeing me as a successful businessman and my hobby for painting and drawing considered nothing more than a hobby. But after the first education, I decided to have the second, and my main - I entered and in 2007 graduated from the St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting named after Repin, majoring in Painting.

- It turns out that you painted all your life.

At first, I was engaged in all sorts of business, but not art, all the same, I had an economic education (smiling), I painted not often and only for myself, sometimes I gave my pictures to friends. But a few years ago I felt such a strong inspiration that I could no longer resist it, I felt the need to paint and devote my life to this.

Now I can say for sure that I cannot imagine myself without pictures. I express myself in it, this is my life, my way of communication.

- Where do you paint pictures?

Both in the studio and at home. At home it’s more difficult. There are children at home - seven and three and a half years old - Maxim and Anfisa, my beloved but very active children, they don’t let their mother work. That’s why I can paint only when they are temporarily away or sleep after 10 pm. Yesterday I painted at night with a flashlight. Sometimes it happens that the lights go out in the street I paint under the lamp - I cannot stop, yesterday I also shone with the phone and painted.

- Do you create only in the field of painting?

No, not only!  I generally like to do everything with my hands. If I were a man, I would make unusual tables and different furniture in general. I really like everything what is handmade. Once I was very fond of making Ikebana, I have also painted pseudo-stained-glass windows, painted furniture, I make brooches, develop prints and tried myself as a designer of clothes.

But the priority, of course, is painting, I adore oil. It is alive, mobile, real.

- What is the difference between the painting of Kass and the other artists? What is the specificity of your paintings?

I used to paint bright naked girls. There was a period in my work when I saw the beauty manifestation of a woman in forms, in appearance. I painted ideal figures that attracted the views of men and even women. These pictures were somewhat even sexy. Now I look absolutely differently at what women's beauty is. And, in general, at that what a woman is? I look around and see different women – of different appearance, from different social layers, of different religions, nationalities and views on life.

But all of us, women, are united by the same things - love, children, society, concern about the future in our country, society, peace in Ukraine. We all want to be happy and loved, have stability, not to be afraid of losing our men in the war. By the way, now we are preparing an exhibition-performance about a woman… Rather, about Apple, as a symbol of a woman) Apple has long been considered a symbol of femininity, youth and freshness. Since the time of the Renaissance, this symbol was a symbol of Venus, representing female beauty.

- What message do these female images have in the form of an Apple as the symbolism present in your paintings?

The paintings that I painted for this exhibition-performance (it won’t be just an exhibition) will be explained by novels each of which reveals the secret meaning of the picture. I want the viewer to understand that the picture is deeper than just painted figures or plot. This is experience, emotion, story - which congealed on the canvas. With this exhibition I want to draw the attention of society to the emotions and experiences of women - maybe someone will say “banal emotions”, but these are the emotions and experiences that the woman is composed of. In our society, little attention is paid to the emotions and experiences of people. Now is emotionally very difficult time, I want to reflect these stories in my pictures.

From the Editorial Board: Anfisa Kass will present her new works in December at a new exhibition-performance, which will take place in the gallery M17. The curator of the exhibition of the artist Kass is the art project CodeKY and Julia Kovaliova as the author of the project. CodeKY creates concepts in art products and now paintings of Anfisa can be purchased on our Internet portal in the section of Art.

We are grateful for the interview to the beautiful artist Kass, which is able to unite many creative directions: to be the host of the program "Fashionable Truth" on television, be engaged in design of interiors, create her own clothing brand and paint such conceptual and integral works of art.
